Upcoming Smartphones 2019
It’s a new year and you might already be wondering what’s to come in 2018, 2019, and even 2020. Not only will new smartphones be unveiled, but other tech devices such as smartwatches and fitness trackers will see major improvements. Several new smartphones are coming soon and internet speculation has led us to believe that other new phones may be introduced as well.
After scouring tech sites and wading through internet gossip, we’ve come up with a list of the top 5 upcoming smartphones 2019 (and even some yet to be released 2018 devices). Some of the finer details such as tech specs and features may change due to uncertainty, but this list should give you an overall view of the upcoming cell phones 2019.
|Phone Name||Certainty||Features||Possible Release Date|
|Samsung Galaxy S9||100%||Fingerprint Scanner|

|Nokia 9||100%||18:9 Aspect Display|
|HTC U12||100%||18:9 Aspect Display|
|Apple iPhone 9||30%||Face Recognition|

Samsung Galaxy S9
The Samsung Galaxy S9 is the most anticipated new Android smartphone that is set to be released. With a release date set for February of 2018, it will be widely available by 2019. This means any defects and problems will be aired out by then and we’ll have a better understanding of just how capable this new phone is.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 is slated to have a new revamped chipset and GPU that can compete with the likes of the new Apple iPhone X. However, most of the new features will be in the form of functionality. It’s rumored to have both a fingerprint and in-screen scanner. The display could also see an increase to 5.6 inches.
Soon to be released is Nokia’s flagship smartphone, the Nokia 9. Recent documents released show that it will have a 5.5 inch OLED display. This is important because the Nokia 8 had a LCD screen and it’s good to see Nokia improving the user experience by going with the best type of display currently available. This also means it will be the phone with Nokia’s best battery life.
One of the biggest selling points is the dual front cameras coming in at 12 and 13 megapixels, respectively. The single front camera is only 5 megapixels, but it’s pretty standard for the industry. Expect an edge to edge display and plenty of juice being powered by the Snapdragon 835 chipset. Possible release date is the beginning of the second quarter of 2018.
Even with recent acquisitions by Google, the HTC U12 is rumored to be in the works and set for a possible release at the end of 2018 or the beginning of 2019. Speculation and early leaks suggest a 5.7 inch 4K display with curved corners and reduced bezel that has become popular with all new phones now.
Most likely it will be equipped with an under-display scanner, rather than on on-screen fingerprint scanner. The camera is said to be a whopping 16 megapixels. Until more is released, this is just all speculation, but it seems highly likely given what the specs of the HTC U11 and what would be needed to improve it.

*Smartphone battery life comparison chart is an estimate. Battery life will fluctuate with usage.
1) Apple iPhone X – Best Smartphone 2019
The Apple iPhone X (or iPhone 10) was introduced at the start of 2018 as Apple’s flagship smartphone device and is the best smartphone out right now. As with most state of the art devices, it boasts some of the latest technology and hardware that is available today. We expect this to remain Apples flagship device well into 2019.
iPhone X Features
- Battery life 2X Longer than iPhone 7
- 30% Faster 3-Core GPU
- Wireless Charging
- Fastest A11 Bionic Chipset
- Facial Recognition
- Reduced Bezel and Larger Screen
The iPhone X beats all other phones in comparison benchmark tests. It’s capabilities are on par with an Intel i5 powered Macbook Pro just to put things in perspective. You’ll be able to watch movies, play games, and conduct work seamlessly.
Long gone is the trademark fingerprint scanner to unlock your phone. It was replaced by Apple’s own facial recognition software which scans your facial features to determine if you’re the owner. Apple has also joined Samsung and others by migrating to the reduced bezel and curved edge displays for maximum viewing. For a phone that will do it all, check out the Apple iPhone X at Amazon.com, it leads the best smartphone 2019 list.
2) Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Note – Best Android Smartphone 2019
Samsung just released the all new Galaxy S9 flagship smartphone and the first accounts look to be a homerun. Improving on the success of the Galaxy S8, Samsung needed a device that could compete with the new iPhone X. We believe they came pretty close to doing just that, but lets take a look at what the new Samsung Galaxy S9 has to offer and why it;s listed second on the best smartphone 2019 review.
- Headphone Jack
- Water Resistant up to 5 feet
- Up to 400 GB of Storage
- Super Speed Camera Technology
- Rear Finger Print Scanner
- Stereo Speakers
You’re probably wondering how the new Samsung Galaxy S9 stacks up to the iPhone X. First, the S9 is equipped with the all important headphone jack that so many complained about when Apple did away with them on their latest phones.
Samsung also increased the storage capacity to an unheard of 400 GB when paired with an external SD card. This is the most capacity of any smartphone currently and well above the internal storage capacity of the iPhone X at 256GB.
The only place the S9 lacks in ability is the recording of 4k video. It’s limited to 5 minutes at 60 FPS, where as the iPhone X has no time limit and is only restrained by storage limitations. Other than that, the Galaxy S9 offers comparable speeds and user experience for Android fans wanting the best. It’s also considerably cheaper than the what Apple has to offer.
3) Samsung Galaxy S8 – Best Gaming Phone 2019
Released to the U.S. on April of 2017, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is still arguably the best Android phone available. With the release of the Galaxy S9 just months away, that is sure to change, but lets take a look at what made the Galaxy S8 one of the best phones of it’s time.
Samsung Galaxy S8 Features
- Seamless Display with Reduced Bezel
- Increased Battery Life (by up to 40%)
- Efficient Exynos 8895 Processor
- 8 MP Front Camera for Facetime
- 4 Video Capture
The Galaxy S8 was intended to be a large improvement over the Galaxy S7 and it performed the task flawlessly. Samsung centered the redesign on battery efficiency by implementing hardware that cut down on available energy needed. The result was a 40% increase in battery life over the S7. The 3000mAh battery pack is best android phone battery currently available.
Samsung also beat Apple to the punch by revealing the Galaxy S8’s seamless display and curved bezel which essentially uses every inch of the viewing screen. This was a big deal in a world where phone sizes had gotten out of hand. The subsequent release of the iPhone X has incorporated several of these features that were first implemented by Samsung. With the release of the iPhone X and the upcoming release of the Galaxy S9, expect the prices for the S8 to become even more affordable.
Samsung Galaxy S8 Processor
The Samsung Galaxy S8 features the new Exynos 9 Series 8895 processor that is one of the fastest and most energy efficient chips available. The Exynos 8895, built on a cutting-edge 10nm FinFET process, features a 2nd generation custom CPU core and an advanced GPU for exceptional performance with low power consumption for extended battery life.
But Samsung did not stop there, they incorporated a 1Gbps LTE-Advanced modem that provides faster connection speeds to the phone itself. Watching movies and streaming video just got a whole lot faster and more efficient.
Just for comparison, the Galaxy S8 has a 27% higher performance rating than the Galaxy S7, all while doing it with 40% less battery consumption. Obviously the Samsung Galaxy S8 is combining all the latest technology and innovation into one package that cannot be matched among other top mobile devices, with the exception of the iPhone X and Galaxy S9.
Apple’s iPhone 8 was released concurrent with the iPhone X, so many of the same features and hardware improvements mirror it. Unfortunately you won’t get the new display and facial recognition, but you’ll get a fast phone that edges out even the Samsung Galaxy S8.
Apple iPhone 8 Features
- 4.7-Inch widescreen LCD
- 12MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization
- 4K Video Recording
- A11 Bionic Chip (30% faster than iPhone 7)
- Wireless Charging
The Apple iPhone 8 looks similar to the iPhone 7, but the differences are like night and day. Inside it’s outfitted with the fastest chip available, the A11 Bionic processor. Coupled with Apple’s new GPU, and you’re looking at a 30% increase in performance over the iPhone 7. It’s truly incredible.
Apple has incorporated wireless charging which makes recharging as simple as placing on the special recharging mat. You won’t have to hook up any cords. The more advanced 12 MP camera comes with a larger and faster sensor, as well as image stabilization which helps reduce blurry photos. For a fast phone with great camera capability, the iPhone 8 is it.
Google released the Pixel 2 XL in late 2017 as it’s flagship smartphone device. Like the iPhone X, Google has ditched the old Google Pixel screen and opted for the all-screen design. This puts it inline with other top smartphones displays like the Samsung Galaxy S8 and others. In contrast, the display of the Google Pixel 2 is 6 inches, compared to the iPhone X at 5.8. It’s important to note however, that the Pixel 2 XL is considerably cheaper even if it is lacking in some areas.
Google Pixel 2 XL Key Features
- All-Screen Design
- 6 Inch Full HD Display
- Snapdragon 835 Processor (Same as the Galaxy S8)
- Edge Sense Technology
The Google Pixel 2 XL is a very capable Android phone on par with the HTC U11 and Samsung Galaxy S8. It’s price is more sensible at around $800, than the iPhone X at around $1200.
Google Pixel 2 Imprint
One new feature the Google Pixel 2 smartphone introduces is the rear finger print sensor/reader called Pixel Imprint. It allows for a fingerprint to unlock your phone, authorize purchases, and even unlock specific apps. This great one handed application and design has been long overdue for rear mounted fingerprint readers and why the Google Pixel Phone ranks high in the Best Smartphone 2019 list.
As with any relatively new release of a product, Google is working to eliminate some bugs that user have experienced with the Pixel Phone. As this smartphone evolves, the user experience will only increase by leaps and bounds.
Overall, the Google Pixel 2 smartphone offers a a great interface, google compatibility, and a well thought out design. High end smartphones should be fast, easy to use, and incorporate cutting edge technology. It’s what keeps consumers engaged and excited. The Google Pixel 2 smartphone is no exception and why it makes the top of the Best Smartphone 2019 list.
6) One Plus 5T
For an affordable cell phone with many of the leading features and top hardware of the other best smartphone 2019, the One Plus 5Tis a great option. It’s Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 835 processor is plenty fast and it comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for added protection. The display size of 6-inches is comparable to the iPhone X and Google Pixel 2 XL.
One Plus 5T key Features
- 16MP and 20MP Cameras
- Snapdragon 835 Processor
- Gorilla Glass 5
- Facial and Fingerprint Scanner
The One Plus 5T is a budget top of the line phone. At around $650, it’s considerably less than the Galaxy S9 and Pixel 2 XL, even though they have the same hardware and are comparable in speeds. If brand names and certain features aren’t needed that other phones proved, then the One Plus 5T makes a great alternative at an even better price. It rounds out the top 7 smartphones that are currently available.
Best Smartphone Overall
The Apple iPhone X is currently the best smartphone you can get. With it’s combination of the latest chipsets, features, and design, nothing really comes close. Sure, there are other phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S8 that have the reduced bezel and facial recognition, but they aren’t as refined. The facial recognition on the iPhone X is light years ahead of what’s offered on the Android platform.
Apple iPhone X Facial Recognition
While you might be saying some of those features don’t matter much to you, it’s hard to downplay that the iPhone X beats the Samsung Galaxy S8 in almost every benchmark test and it’s not even really that close. We’ll take a look at some of those benchmark tests when we discuss the fastest cell phones for 2019 further in this review, but below is a comparison of the top smartphones after running the popular AnTuTu benchmark test. As you can see, the iPhone x and iPhone 8 perform these benchmark tests considerably better.
New Additions to the iPhoneX
- Face ID Recognition Unlocking
- HDR Display with 1 million to 1 contrast
- 5.8-inch OLED Screen
- All-screen display design (display extends to the edges)
- A11 Bionic Processor with new Apple GPU
iPhone X Display
The iPhone X display comes with OLED display, the first for any iPhone device. At 5.8 inches, its screen size is comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S8 and its infinity display. It boasts improved contrast, True Tone display technology, HDR quality, and higher resolution and contrast to previous iPhone models.
The All-screen display design maximizes the available display to produce seamless video with the edges of the iPhone X. The entire display is now utilized, leaving no dead spots or unused space. This has allowed Apple to keep the overall dimensions of the iPhone X smaller and comparable to other smartphones which makes it easier to hold in one hand and fit in your pocket.
iPhone X Features
Since the screen is literally at the edges of the entire phone, gone is the trusted home button and touch ID. Users of the iPhone X now can either wake the phone up by picking it up, or by one touch of the display. Unlocking the iPhone X is done with biometric Face ID which uses IR scanning capabilities to map your facial features and only unlock when it senses the user. Face ID can’t be spoofed by photos and there’s only a 1:1,000,000 chance someone other than you can unlock your phone. The chance was 1:50,000 with touch ID, so it’s a step up.
iPhone X Specs
As expected, almost every benchmark performance standard has been increased exponentially with the iPhone X. This is due in large part to the new A11 Bionic processor which has 4 high performance cores. Each of which can be activated by an internal controller if the need arises to save battery usage when not in use. Just to put it in perspective, the new A11 chipset found in the iPhone X and iPhone 8 shows an 80% multi-core increase over the A10 chipset found in the iPhone 7. And if that doesn’t drive the point home, it’s also faster than the Intel Core i5 processor found in the baseline Macbook Pro. Apple is also including their very own graphics processor in the iPhone X that is leaps and bounds ahead of previous models.
Overall, this is one great looking phone with the newest technology that’s available on the cell phone market. Apple has redesigned the display for seamless edges and reduction of useless space. The A11 chipset and new Apple GPU are the fastest hardware currently available in a smartphone. It blows away the iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S8 in benchmark tests. For Apple fans, and those that want the best phones coming out in 2019, the Apple iPhone X is it!
The only negative thing to say about the iPhone X is the price. It’s considerably higher than Galaxy S8 by $300-400 at most online retailers. That’s a hefty difference and probably leaves many wondering if the added performance boost is really worth it. For surfing the internet and watching movies, it’s probably not, but the idea of having a smartphone device that can do almost everything with ease and is more powerful than an Intel i5 powered Macbook Pro, there’s just something refreshing about it. Check out the iPhone X at Amazon.
What to look for in 2019?
With technology ever increasing, that means new and exciting features will be implemented into new cell phone devices. These improvements for 2019 will be in the form of faster processors, better graphics, improved battery life, and a better user interface. Here are a few smartphone updates you should look for in 2019.
Phones With the Best Battery Life
With the increase in energy demands and effort to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels, battery development has increased exponentially within the last decade. Research and development in the private sector by companies such as Tesla and others have energized what was once a slow growing field. Expect new phones in 2019 to have the latest battery technology and require less charging.
Self Charging Devices
Expect to see new cell phone’s incorporate ways to recharge in unconventional ways. Motion charging has already been implemented in smaller devices, and Apple has already considered using it int he Apple Watch. Motion charging uses kinetic energy from movement to charge the battery on a device. This is a pretty ingenious charging method for fitness related devices such as fitness trackers. It’s unclear how effective this technology would be on a smartphone, but all charging methods eventually add up.
Solar is another field that could offer increased charging capabilities in future smartphones in 2019. Companies like Sunpartner Technologies have already developed solar skins that can recharge certain devices by using the suns energy. It’s only a matter of time when we won’t even need to pay attention to our phones battery anymore.
Several new developments are in the works that will revolutionize smartphone displays and these could be unveiled in 2019. Apple has been heavily dependent on Corning’s Gorilla Glass, but a change to sapphire screens could be on the horizon. That’s not to say Gorilla Glass isn’t a capable screen material, it’s just that we all know phone screens still break. Any effort to reduce cracked screens, such as using sapphire displays instead, would be an added bonus.
Here you can see the testing of Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4. They have recently released Gorilla Glass 5 and it’s installed on most new devices.
Camera Technology Improvements
In the past it was always about more megapixels, but for 2019 it’s all about the add-on’s. Apple has already filed patents to incorporate interchangeable iPhone lenses into their lineup. Customizable lenses would allow you to choose the lens that’s right for any situation. These lenses have two mounting options, either attached magnetically or using a special phone cover. Either way, expect many news camera add-on features for 2019.
Something to also keep an eye on is the anti-recording feature that some new phone manufacturers might equip their 2019 phones with. Due to complaints by artists and the music industry, this anti-recording feature would disable your phone at certain events to prevent you from capturing any video or sound. An infrared signal would be emitted that would disable all compatible devices from recording. It’s yet to be seen if this will happen, but there have been patents filed that suggest it’s being considered.
5G Technology in 2019 and 2020
Talks have already started about how to integrate the latest 5G network technology into the Unites States. As with 4G networks that are now standard, the U.S. want’s to be the first to wirelessly implement the 5G system. As you can probably imagine, it’s currently caught up in a bureaucratic mess since tax payer funds will help pay for a portion, but it’s something to consider for 2019 phones. The best smartphones 2019 will likely have 5G capability.
The most exciting thing about 5G implementation is that it’s rumored to be 10 times faster than 4G.
The first 5G cell phone we’ve heard announced is the Moto Z3 from Motorola. This is exciting news as the infrastructure for 5G has not even been fully implemented or tested yet.
Even so, it proves that cell phone makers are already designing 2019 phones to be 5G capable to take advantage of the inevitable switch over. Expect Apple, Samsung, and Google to release 5G capable iPhones, Galaxy’s, and Google Phone lineups in the near future.
Fastest Cell Phone for 2019
The Apple iPhone X is currently the fastest smartphone you can buy. The combination of the A11 Bionic processor and 3-core GPU give it the best benchmark performance across a wide range of tests. Below are the results of the iPhone X benchmark scores compared to other top phones out right now.
iPhone X Crushes AnTuTu Benchmark
AnTuTu is a popular benchmark app that assesses many different aspects of a device, including CPU, RAM, GPU, and other factors. A higher score is a better performing device. The following graphs compare cell phones side by side.
GFXBench Manhattan Benchmark Scores
Geekbench 4 Multi-core Benchmark Results
As you can see, the iPhone X excels above other smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus and Galaxy S8 in these popular benchmark tests. Scores for AnTuTu, GFXBench Manhattan, and Geekbench all were considerably higher for the iPhone X. It’s important to note that these tests take into account a wide range of factors, including CPU, GPU, and RAM in order to fully test each device.
It remains to be seen just how fast the Galaxy S9 or HTC U12 will be, but it will be hard pressed to beat the iPhone X. We expect both to close the gap considerably, but likely to fall short. For the fastest phone you can purchase right now, check out the iPhone X at Amazon.com.
When Do New Phones Come Out in 2019?
When will the best smartphones 2019 be released? It’s a very common question, and one that isn’t always easily answered. Manufacturers are often tight lipped about upcoming releases, which leads to speculation. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t get a pretty good indication of what to look for and when.
New Apple Smartphones for 2019
Apple just released the iPhone 8 and iPhone X at the end of 2017. The Apple iPhone X is currently the best smartphone 2019. This means that any new revolutionary phone is at least a year away. There may be minor improvements released for the iPhone 8, but don’t expect anything exceptionally different. The next release will either be the iPhone 9 or iPhone 11 (depending on which route Apple decides to go with the naming scheme) and it may be released later this year or early 2019.
Past iPhone Releases and Anticipated 2019 Release Date
Upcoming Android Smartphones 2019
The most anticipated upcoming Android release is the Samsung Galaxy S9. It’s slated to start shipping in February 2018.
The Google Pixel 2 XL was released at the end of 2017 so don’t expect a replacement from Google for at least a year. Nokia will be releasing the Nokia 9 series phones in May of 2018. Expect the HTC u12 to be released sometime in May of 2018 or later since that’s around the 1 year time frame from when the HTC U11 was made available.

Android vs. iOS Comparison, which is better?
This is a hot topic in the smartphone world. Similar to the ongoing Intel vs AMD processor debate, Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS are the top two smartphone operating systems available. Most people would just choose Android if they own a PC or iOS if they own a Mac, but is that the correct way to go about it?
First off, both operating systems were created around the same time(Android 2008, Apple 2007). Both have extensive amounts of Apps available through Google Play and the Apple App Store. Both offer maps in the form of Google Maps and Apple Maps, both have voice commands, and both operating systems provide every other general aspect you would expect a smartphone to have. The difference is that Android provides more customization.
With Android, also you have more smartphone products and devices available than whats in the Apple product line. Android smartphones also tend to have larger batteries. The bottom line is that Android provides are more in depth user experience if you are a developer. Apple iOS would be a fine choice for a turn-key user experience with a rock solid platform.
Google Play vs Apple App Store, which is better?
The two leaders in App development are Google Play and the Apple App Store. Here a few facts about the two:
- Google play currently has around 1.3 million Apps, while the Apple App Store has around 1.2 million.
- There are more downloads per store on Google Play than the Apple App Store (160 vs 100). However, the Apple generates more revenue per store than Google Play.
- The Apple App Store requires the use of iTunes (an annoying feature), while Google Play’s web interface is more compatible.
- Watching movies or media from Apple requires the use of an apple device or iTunes. Google media is compatible with all devices.
Clearly, Google Play offer’s more customization and less restriction. The Apple App Store offers higher revenue generation per the App store.
Smartphone Camera Megapixels, Is More Better?
16 megapixels is always better than 8 megapixels, right? You might be surprised that this is not always the case.
In camera devices, the Sensor that receives light from the pixels can matter more than the number of pixels themselves. It’s even been proven that adding more pixels on the same size sensor can increase the amount of noise, having the opposite effect. This is why 8 megapixels with a good sensor and evenly distributed pixels can outperform poorly designed 16 megapixels crammed on a tiny sensor.
So more megapixels aren’t always better, and you should be aware that higher megapixels can often be a marketing strategy that offers no added benefit. The best smartphone 2019, the iPhone X, has a 12 megapixel camera and 10X zoom.
How Much Smartphone Memory is Enough?
As you’ve probably noticed, most Smartphones come with 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, or even 128GB of memory. But do you really need the highest memory capacity available at the increased cost? The simple answer is how much do you use your smartphone and for what purpose?
If you do everything with your phone, then it makes sense to get the maximum memory possible. If you are a casual user, then saving money on a lower capacity memory version makes sense. Some smartphones offer removable micro SD cards that allow you to increase the memory at any time.
Other smartphones like the iPhone do not allow for storage capacity upgrades, so this aspect should be taken into consideration when purchasing. Low cost smartphones and low budget smartphones will always have the lowest amount of memory available.
Every phone in the best smartphone 2019 review has at least 64 GB of memory.
What is the Ideal Smartphone Screen Size?
The general trend with smartphones has been the ever increasing screen sizes. What started out as a standard 3 inch screen has morphed into displays closer to 6 inches.
While the larger screen has provided better viewing experiences with YouTube and movie streaming, it’s also added extra battery capacity crammed into the large phone case. But all this increase in size comes at a cost. It’s increased the weight of the phone and reduced the ability to easily handle or store it. Good luck even putting some of the larger phones in your pocket anymore.
If this not a factor for you then a larger display makes perfect sense. But if you are on the move and need to conceal your phone easily, then a smaller display might be the better option. Studies have shown the optimal preferred screen size is 4-4.5 inches. Every phone in the best smartphone 2019 list is greater than 4.5 inches.
The Bottom Line
The iPhone X is currently the best smartphone 2019. It’s benchmark tests prove that it’s the fastest cell phone available, with the only downside being the high price tag. The Samsung Galaxy S9 is slated to be released in February of 2018, but it will be a tall task for it to dethrone the iPhone X.
Other top smartphones to keep an eye out for are the release of the Nokia 9 around May 2018, the HTC U12 sometime later this year, and the LG G7 possibly around the beginning of 2019. The Apple iPhone 9 and iPhone 11 will likely be released at the end of 2019 since Apple does a yearly unveil that is almost predictable at this point. The Samsung Galaxy S9 was just released, so don’t hold out for a Galaxy S10 until sometime in 2020.
Due to the expensive price tag on most of the upcoming cell phones, we’ve found budget cell phones like the Moto G5S Plus to be a great alternative. It’s less than $250 at Amazon.com. For an even cheaper smartphone, the BLU Studio X8 HD phone is less than $50 and a very capable device.
2019 looks to be an exciting time for new phone developments. We expect to see improvements made across the board, but especially with the increase of battery life. Telsa and other battery manufacturers continue to press forward with battery development and even wireless charging is becoming standard. We expect 5G to hit the market soon with speeds up to 10 times greater than that of 4G LTE. These improvements look to combine the latest technology into some of the best cell phones we’ve ever seen.
Check back soon as new devices are released and added to the Best Smartphone 2019 list!
